Lorraine Hansberry was the first African American woman to be produced on Broadway. She was born at Provident Hospital, located in the South Side of Chicago, on May 19, 1930. Hansberry was the daughter of Carl Augustus Hansberry and Nannie Perry Hansberry, making her the youngest of four children. Her father was the founder of Lake Street Bank in Chicago. Hansberry father became one of the first black person to run a bank plus a real estate business that was successful. William Leo Hansberry, her uncle, study at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
