Lorne Avenue Public School has been an important institution in London’s Old East Village for 141 years. After many struggling debates between the parent council of Lorne Avenue and the Thames Valley District School Board, Lorne Avenue will be closing its doors this June. As such, a celebration will be taken place to celebrate Lorne Avenue’s 141 years of educated and shaping young minds. However, Lorne Avenue closing has more societal issues. This story is important because it exemplifies the pressing issue of low enrollment rates of Southern Ontario elementary schools. Moreover, Lorne Avenue Public School’s closing is significant to the community as it a central location not only for students but for a wide array of community …show more content…
Firstly, this story will focus on Scott Maclean, and Joanne Bishop, co-chairs of the party planning committee and member of the Save Lorne Avenue Public School community group who offers a parent voice as well as a community member voice. By having Maclean and Bishop as the main characters, the reader can get an insight into their personal connection with Lorne Avenue as well as the efforts that were made into saving the school. In addition, the story can focus on other characters who have been influenced by Lorne Avenue. Alea Girardin and her three children can also be a focus of the story. The Girardin family gives the reader a more emotional side of the story because Alea has shared her memories of Lorne Avenue with her children. As such, by interview the children, the reader can get a sense of how the school as impacted them. I would begin this video with an establishing shot of Maclean walking the empty halls of Lorne Avenue Public School with his children. I would then interview Maclean about what Lorne Avenue means to him and his family, and the struggle he went through to keep Lorne Avenue open, including the Save Lorne Avenue Committee, the struggle with the school board, among others. This video would focus on Maclean’s attempt to organize a party for Lorne Avenue, and the aspects he would like to implement. Furthermore, I would include B-Roll of the school’s now empty facilities to emphasize the important building that is being forced to close its doors. I could also interview Joanne Bishop, co-chair of the Save Lorne Avenue Committee in this video. Bishop could perhaps explain the logistics of the party planning and the committee’s hope of raising $10,000 via a GoFund Me page for the party. (CTV 3). Further, she could also discuss the guest list for the event as she states in a CTV coverage, “We want to throw a great big party for the kids, current kids plus past students. We would like past students and staff to come back and join us for the party as well” (2). However, it is also important to indicate the challenge in this story; whether or not the committee with raise the money they need. Here I could indicate that as of March 3rd, the committee has only raised $2000 (Dubinksi 3). After reporting this fact, I
