Nancy’s mother was scattered and bewildered – she would act sweet to Nancy’s friends then rapidly change, she was always talking to herself, she was angry, and she would have fainting spells. Nancy’s mother was labeled as “eccentric” because she was rich. At home, she lived with her Mom, Dad, and two brothers. Nancy’s cousin also labeled as crazy – she would yell and say things that Nancy and her father felt were very strange. Nancy did everything, and she did she did it well. She was beautiful, good at decorating and cooking for 50 people, and she was also on the PTA. Marvin came from a lower income family and was the first in his family to graduate from college, so his children and wife were very proud of him. Marvin received his Ph.D in psychology, so it was extremely difficult, at first, for him to let his daughter go into a mental hospital because he knew of the labels and stigmas that accompanied the disorders. Her mother never worried about Lori or her youngest son because they were intrepid while her middle child was shy, awkward, seemed to be depressed and mopey, and wrote poems about death and suicide. Lori grew up in a wealthy and competitive society where the students competed for grades to get in the best colleges including Harvard. Her parents expected nothing less than
