Lorenzo’s Oil
The movie Lorenzo Oil is about a boy who had a disease known as Adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD. It began with Lorenzo at the age of six in 1978 in East Africa, where he learned how to speak more than one language with the Comoros, an East African tribe. He was there with his parents, Augusto and Michaela Odone.
When the family returned to Washington, D.C., Lorenzo began showing symptoms of the disease. The first time was when he became violent and ruined the other kids’ paintings at kindergarten one day. He put the bad fats on a large chain and the good fats on smaller chains. Somehow in a dream he had he figured out how he could make the bad fats stop growing faster than the good fats. This is where the title of the movie Lorenzo’s Oil came into play. Lorenzo’s dad used a chemist from Germany to combine a mix of oleic acid and erucic acid by extract them from rapeseed oil and olive oil. Before Lorenzo drank the oil, it was tested with his healthy aunt. After eating it, she showed no side affects from taking it. Then Lorenzo used it. Bingo! His health improved. However, he did not become completely normal because of how badly the disease had damaged him. A few years later scientist, observed ALD in dogs and found out how to restore myelin, which helps restore parts of the nervous system. This discovery helped to improve Lorenzo’s mobility. In the end, Lorenzo was able to communicate with a computer. He died at the age of 30 on May 30, 2008, years after doctors had said he would die. His story is one of many lessons, including that doctors don’t always have the answers and that a loving, determined, and desperate father can overcome any
