“The Father of Beekeeping”
Lorenzo L. Langstroth was born on December 25, 1810, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Lorenzo was an adventure boy, who he loved to study small insects. Wretchedly, as he began to grow up he forgot about his love for bugs. In the year 1831 Lorenzo graduated from Yale
University with a degree in theology(ExploringPahistory.com). He put his degree to good use and became a pastor of numerous congregational churches in Massachusetts, two of these churches were the South Congregational Church of Andover Massachusetts (1836-1843) and 2nd Congregational Church of Greenfield Massachusetts (1843-1848) (Wikipedia). Due to poor health Lorenzo moved his family to the Philadelphia, and created a bee yard in west Philadelphia. The bee yard helped him get over his health issues. As Lorenzo spent more time with the bees and the studying of the bees he began to come up with a new idea to make the beehive more efficient. He stated, “The almost self-evident idea of using the same bee space … came into my mind, and in a moment the suspended movable frames, kept at a suitable distance from each other and the case containing them came into being… I could scarcely refrain from shouting out my ‘Eureka’ in the open streets(ExploringPahistory.com).” This quote is Lorenzo coming up with a better and more efficient beehive, which today is called the Langstroth Hive. Furthermore, Langstroth wrote a several bee books that are filled with many scientifically and useful fact about bees. These books are, Langstroth on the Hive and Honey Bee and Basics of Beekeeping. Lorenzo made one of the biggest impact on the beekeeping world, by creating the Langstroth Hive and writing his beekeeping
