The word home has been used since the ninth century, but the idea of home has existed for far longer. Since the beginning, protection against weather and other elements has always been necessary for survival. Because of this, humans and animals have instinctively sought shelter. Not just in the physical sense, but rather emotional comfort and a feeling of security. Home is a wherever I am able to fully let down any guards I’ve built up and be myself. It’s place where I can laugh without inhibition and speak my mind without fear of judgment. Many people relate home to their childhoods. When I think of home I remember playing in the sand outside during the summer, waking up early on Christmas morning, and chasing chickens around the yard with my brothers. I don’t need to go back to the house I grew up in to feel at home, I have memories and experiences that I can take with me anywhere. Author Jody Picoult wrote, “Maybe you had to leave in order to really miss a place; maybe you had to travel to figure out how beloved your starting point was.” This definitely hits home for me, no pun intended. I never thought I would be someone to be homesick. Growing up I couldn’t wait to leave and start my own life, away from my parents. But now, seven years after moving away I will sometimes feel a twinge of sadness when I think about how far away my family is. . But it helps me to remember that they are always a part of me, and only a text or phone call
