As modern day fantasy, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy can be defined as a monomyth. A monomyth is simply defined as a hero’s journey. Frodo, the hero of the trilogy, is seen refusing the call to adventure at first but then accepting it. On his journey, he aided by supernatural forces and tested throughout his journey. After he completed his task of destroying the Ring, he returns home but unsatisfied. This follows Joseph Campbell’s template of monomyth.

The first is when the Ringwraiths attack the hobbits at Weathertop. It is biggest danger the hobbits meet on their way to Rivendell after the first threshold crossing and, while they have met with the Ringwraiths a little, this is the first real up close and personal encounter with them that ends in Frodo getting stabbed and Aragorn saving the day. The second belly of the whale is when the fellowship gets stuck in the Mines of Moria. This is the first major danger that they come across after leaving Rivendell and crossing that threshold. Frodo becomes the master of two worlds in two separate scenes of the movie. The first time is when Aragorn says to the hobbits, "My friends... you bow to no-one." He then bows and the rest of Gondor follows suite. This shows the true respect and gratitude he feels for all of their honorable work. The second time is when Frodo finishes writing his book. He is not home mentally and even tells Sam, "We set out to save the Shire, and it has been saved... but not for me..." This shows his mind is still wandering although his body is in the Shire.
Freedom to live comes when the ring is destroyed. Though out of order, this phase of the monomyth is all about living in a peaceful world. When the ring falls into Mt.
