The ability to work together is a major theme is Lord of the Flies. Without it, the boys on the island would have a much lower chance of survival. When the boys first crash on the island, they find a conch shell. Whoever has the conch shell is the only one who can speak at that time. The only way to make fire on the island is using Piggy's glasses. Fire gives him the ability to cook food, make a signal fire, and stay warm on cold nights. In order to obtain Piggy's glasses, he must steal them from Ralph. To do so, Jack decides to raid Ralph’s camp. When everyone one in Ralph's camp went to sleep, Jack and his hunters invade. They get the supplies that they needed and injure Ralph and many others. Later on, Ralph ends up fleeing into the woods, giving Jack full control of the island. Before Ralph goes into the woods to hide, Jack throws a spear at him and shouts, “See?…I’m Chief!(181)” Ralph knows that he has been defeated and is no longer in charge. If Jack and Ralph did not possess a quest for power, then the boys would have no one to lead them and no one to assign them jobs. Without anyone wanting to be in charge, the anatomy of the island would not have be as structured, and the boys would also not have been as disciplined.
In addition, another theme of Lord of the Flies is determination. Determination plays a major part in the life of the boys on the island. Without it, the boys would have given up once when their plane crashed on the island, or when they let their first pig get away. They would not have had the willpower to continue surviving on the
