The book “Lord of the flies” by William Golding is about a group of boys who are stranded on an island after their plane was, tragically, shot down. While they are on the island, the string that connects them to the outside world, and who they really are inside, is stretched to its limits and, eventually, severed. Without an adult figure present, they decide that they need someone to take charge. The kids end up taking a vote which gave this position to Ralph. With the weight of this on his shoulders, Ralph did the best that he knew how. At the age of only thirteen, he had to try to keep the peace on the island and enforce the rules that were set for everyone. This is a lot for one person to deal with alone. They had rules that they lived by and had at least a little bit of respect for each other. As time went on, however, things began to spiral out of control. Everyone started slacking on their responsibilities and they began to bicker amongst each other. The main quarrel was between Ralph and Jack. Ralphs part in this was mostly because he let his fear get the better of him. Jack hated the fact that everyone had voted Ralph for chief. He wanted the power for himself and to have all of children to look up to him as their protector. He possessed a rapacious disposition. Then after awhile all he could think about was death. He decided to leave the group taking his followers with him, and anyone who did not agree with him, such as Ralph and Piggy, was his enemy.
Jack began to have a bad effect on the others that followed him. Roger, for instance, decided that he wanted to be just like Jack. He started to become a vile little boy. He began to get violent towards the other boys such as throwing rocks at them, hitting them, and he even ended up murdering Piggy. “High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever.” (180) “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee…” (181). With Jack egging the fights on, things on the island were bound to explode sooner or later. It was just sooner than anyone would have liked to
