Things happen for a reason, good or bad. But what causes things to happen? Who or what is involved for something to happen so good or so bad? From the novel, Lord of the Flies written by William Golding, Ralph asks a similar question, “What makes things break up the way they do?”. Ralph asks this question in chapter eight, the sow kill. In this chapter is when things went downhill. The boys turn into savage and uncivilized boys which result to Ralph questioning. The philosophes of Freud, Hobbes and Locke are what make things break up the way they do. Freud’s philosophy of id, superego, and ego break up the characters personalities and actions which either led to a positive or negative outcome. Hobbes’ philosophy of man’s desire for power leads to arguments and fights. Afterall, the lust for power leads to savagery. And lastly, Locke’s philosophy of society and government is what destroys the character's initial personality. Golding certainly includes many aspects of these philosophers theories which is what results into the uncivilized and savagery …show more content…
He also believes that people are not born good or evil. He believes that people are born with an empty mind which therefore the mind develops from the experiences the person has. Locke’s philosophy is the last reason to why things break up the way they do. In the beginning of the novel. Jack was a somewhat nice and charismatic character. Unfortunately, Jack throughout the novel gets violent and mean. This ties up with Locke’s theory that people start off with nothing but develop into something different depending on the society. An example of Jack’s change into a brutal person is on page 152, “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill the blood!”. Another theory of Locke is the natural state of man, the freedom to live outside the control of government. Jack’s tendency to savagery represent Locke’s theory of natural state of

When society breaks down, death and destruction incur. In the book The Lord Of The Flies by William Golding the effects of the breakdown of society is a major theme. Humans identities are formed when society’s rules and laws are non existent, and humans are forced to rely off of their own morals. This can be seen when Ralph’s tribe is demolished by Jack because of Jack 's different ideology . In addition, Piggy’s logic and intelligence when talking about advanced topics on the island also show how identity is formed through a lack of societal laws.…

People often hide under a mask of goodness to cover their true intentions, those of evil and deceit. Once an individual’s disguise is destroyed by one’s reality, another can clearly see through one’s disguise and see who one truly is. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding proves the bitter reality of a world under the disguise of goodness; he emphasizes the darkness and evil of mankind through an island that alludes to the real world. Simon is developed as a Christ figure and one who is too utopic in contrast to the savage and evil of the boys, who are the opposite of a Christ figure. Simon’s death represents the destruction of a utopian character by reality, as the boy’s true savagery is the cause of Simon’s death.…

In chapter 1 you are introduced to the main characters Ralph, Piggy, Sam, Eric, Jack, Roger, and Simon. Ralph is a strong leader and is very influential to most of the group, while Jack likes to command the other half of the group into following him through intimidation. Unlike Ralph or Jack, Piggy is a happy and occasionally shy, self-conscious, and friendly child who use to be bullied for his portly size. Roger and Simon are both introverted and timid in front of most of the group. Sam and Eric are truly twins, both being passive and wanting what’s best for the group although unwilling to do so.…

Jack trying to kill Ralph while he is fully aware of what he is doing shows that he is a character with evil. Likewise, when Jack argues about hunting, the book states, “He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up” (51). This means that Jack wanted to kill and hunt and it was overwhelming him. Enhancing the fact that Jack is an evil character, the quote shows Jack having an ill-intention that was taking him over. Humankind is naturally evil and often times shown in broad daylight.…

Even after the war ends, the momentum of discrimination and the after effects of war do not cease. Suffering does not simply disappear, and neither does the pervading attitudes of the past. When Naomi relocates to Granton, she works as a sugar beet picker, consciously aware of her appearance and humiliation of her situation. She is no longer a child, and her experiences at Slocan and sudden departure from her father reveal the cruel nature of all people. She “slash out the Canada thistle, Dandelions, crabgrass, and other nonbeet plants”(234), metaphorically attacking her rage against the evils of society.…

While reading “The Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, I paid most of my attention to Simon. Simon is viewed as a much more confusing kid in the beginning. Simon starts getting more involved and not really known as the weird gay kid anymore. He had hung around with Ralph and Piggy helping out them while the others didn’t care. The author made Simon a much more like Christ-figure within the story; during Chapter 7 he tells Ralph that he will get back home.…

The Lord of the Flies is based on the survival of these kids who survived a plane crash while being deserted on and island. The blog which explains human nature says that humans work best in need for survival by working in groups. This works with the LoF series as Ralph who led his group went along doing task according to who had the best skill set for the job. For example due to a vote Ralph was selected as leader due to traits such as bravery as well as being the more civilized one in the group. In chapter 3 we could see Ralph and Simon working together to build houses for the rest of the group to make shelter.…

Chapter five of Lord of the Flies by William Golding is possibly my favorite chapter so far. It was easy to read, and it did not have any super intense vocabulary. The chapter also discussed many great parts of the story that were being pushed to the side to talk about other things. This discussion of leftover matters was brought together by Ralph’s assembly. As Ralph says in the beginning of the chapter, “This meeting must not be fun, but business” (65).…

“Maybe there is a beast.... maybe it's only us” (Golding 89). Simon, a main character in William Golding’s allegorical novel, Lord of the Flies, is portrayed as a Jesus figure, as he is the only moral boy on the island. Through a group of British schoolboys, Lord of the Flies displays the underlying savagery in all human beings even the most civilized ones. Simon, through his actions, thoughts and dialogue, is parallel to Jesus in a multitude of ways.…
