Lord Of The Flies Ralph Leadership Analysis

A successful leader has qualities that inspire others. In the beginning of the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph is elected as the chief; however some of the boys disagree with this decision and would rather have someone else as their chief. Ralph was voted chief when the majority of the boys on the island voted for him over Jack. At first in the novel Ralph seems to be a quality leader, organized and charismatic, but as the novel progresses Ralph starts to become weak. Instead he starts to focus on what he wants, getting rescued, rather than what the rest of the group wants to hunt. He becomes less and less selfless, disrespectful to the littluns, and slowly his followers start to follow Jack. Ralph’s actions start to become …show more content…
Patience is an important quality of a successful leader to mend to the group during times of anger and stress. Piggy is the only one on the island who takes the time to listen to each of the boys on the island including the littluns. The boys on the island completely ignore the littluns and do not value their opinions; however a skillful leader would take the time to speak to everyone and take into account their opinions. According to Ralph and the other boys the littluns do not deserve respect. Furthermore the boy with the small mulberry birthmark wants to speak, but Ralph would not let him. Piggy convinces Ralph to let the boy speak to tell the group about his fears. Piggy says, “Let him have the conch!” (LOTF, Pg 35) “Piggy knelt by him, one hand on the great shell, listening and interpreting to the assembly.” (LOTF, Pg 35) Additionally Piggy is the only one on the island who cares about the littluns ideas and feelings. Piggy knelt down next to the boy with the small mulberry birthmark and interpreted what he was saying to the assembly. When the littlun was speaking about his fears of the beasie or snake like animal he saw, the boys ignored his fears and told him that what he saw did not exist. However Piggy with his patience comforts the littlun and truly listens to his fears while the others just ignore
