Do you feel safe with the current stability of the world’s nuclear superpowers? Especially with the modern advances in nuclear weaponry making them even more deadly and widespread. In the story, “Lord of the Flies” boys from a school in the U.K. crash while flying over the Pacific Ocean during the Cold War. With no parents and nothing stopping them from complete savagery they start to try to create a civilization to survive and get rescued. After the ruler, Ralph is overthrown by a power hungry boy named Jack who is more focused on hunting and surviving then getting rescued. The fire which is created as a smoke signal by Ralph using Piggy’s specs represents uranium and nuclear power or weaponry. The fire just like uranium was originally used for good; as a smoke signal, yet later on it was stolen and used to roast the pig Jack’s group killed so the fire tore them apart. "The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don’t keep a fire going?” Pg. 113-114 Paragraph 8. Uranium was used for medical research and power but was used for weapons and destruction later on which caused even more separation between the nations. The island the boys landed on represents the world and our populated land. The island is where all of the commotion takes place and is what houses the madness of the boys attempted civilization. Ralph represents a smart, reasonable leader or a peace maker like George Washington. Washington led the country to victory and later made the decisions that shaped this country. Ralph took the lead of the group of boys and made the decisions which were completely reasonable and would have led to success if the rest of the boys would have listened. Jack’s offering to the beast represents the religion’s of the world and our fear of the afterlife and the unknown. After Jack hunts a pig and feasts with the hunters they leave the head out as an offering to “the beast” because they thought if they did that the beast wouldn’t attack them even with no past experience with the
