For a government to function properly the leader or leaders must be elected, not given power. In the beginning of Lord of the Flies Ralph is elected leader. Everyone has respect for Ralph because they are the ones who chose him. So when he tells people to do things, besides the lazy people, they get them done. Since people had a say in who their leader is they truly believe that their decisions are for the greater good of the community. So now the people of the community will cooperate with the leader and help him or her achieve their goal. “Let’s have a vote. Yes!”(22). In The Destructors by Graham Greene, Trevor or T. starts out with one of his only rights being to vote. Even then he can only say yes or no during the vote, he has no other say.
