March 28, 1945. As I lay in my bed, I hear the trumpet set of outside. Sergeant Howard burst through the wooden door, “Rise and shine magots, today we scout the North side of the island.” Everyone rises from their slumber and heads outside. My brother Cliff calls to me, “Hey Desmond, how about me and you get a bite before we go?” I shrug, “I guess, but i’ll catch up with you.” I grab my bag that carries my medicine and Sergeant Howard looks my direction and says, “Private Doss, are you well stocked on medicine and supplies?” I answer, “Yes Drill Sergeant!” He chuckles then grins, “Good, because you are going to need them for the injured men we are going to have.” Doss was confused didn’t Sergeant Howard say we were only going to scout? In the novel ¨Lord of The Flies¨, author William Golding suggests many different meanings with his choice of the words and phrases he uses in the chapter titles of his novel. The word choice of each title depicts what might happen in each section of the story, but it also gives the reader a chance to interpret the significance of the chapter’s meaning. The title of chapter 2 is “Fire on the Mountain”. Out of context, fire is denoted as a state, process, or instance of combustion in which fuel or other material is ignited and combined with oxygen, giving off light, heat, and flame. Light, heat and flame are all very good things to help a society, however, it is given a negative connotation with the combination of being on a mountain.…

This novel takes place on a tropical island where a plane filled with English school boys crashes. Although the time of the crash and reasoning isn’t elaborated on, I theorized that because the book was written shortly after world war two had ended the book probably takes place sometime during the war. Considering that and the plane being ablaze as it crashed into the water, I believe it may have been being mistaken as an enemy aircraft and gunned down. The author begins the novel by describing the plane crash and distinguishing the main characters, but quickly establishes the idea of a social pyramid; the able-bodied boys like Ralph and Jack on top, and the less robust boys like Piggy at the bottom. The survivors of the crash swiftly elected…

Ralph had been hiding for days (he had lost track at this point) in the woods behind a huge, thick bush. He had no clue how Jack and the savages had not yet found him, but all he could think of at the moment was how thirsty and hungry he was. Once he got up, he ran as fast he could, often falling over rocks and running against branches and thorns, which left gashes all over him. He was so famished that vision of the past few weeks began to enter his mind that he believed it was real. He saw himself blowing on the conch for a meeting, he saw himself being nominated as the chief, and he saw himself talking to all the littuns.…

Roger eyed the glasses in Jack’s bloody hand, as the three boys darted along the shore. They were slowly exhausted by the depth of the pale sand that moulded cruelly around their feet. Roger felt like a British officer, charging heroically along the pebbly sand with the stolen plans of the German opposition. The blood in his mouth was bittersweet, however. He once again felt Ralph’s bony fist pounding into his cheek.…

While they are on the island, the string that connects them to the outside world, and who they really are inside, is stretched to its limits and, eventually, severed. Without an adult figure present, they decide that they need someone to take charge. The kids end up taking a vote which gave this position to Ralph. With the weight of this on his shoulders, Ralph did the best that he knew how.…

After this event, the boys decided to reenact it because they found it humorous and entertaining, and Robert acted as the boar. All of the boys decided to participate in this reenactment, including Ralph, and they were not gentle or considerate of what they were doing.…

The story “Lord of the Flies” is a big hidden message about human nature, the beautiful aspects and the ugly. It is completely blunt about what every person has deep within them. Whether people choose to embrace or reject their flaws is how everyone develops their personal journey, good or bad. Everyone has a beginning, followed by trials and tribulations in life in order to develop a unique and individual personality and then they can find their true selves. That is the journey that “Lord of the Flies” is able to create in its plot, with every character (or symbol) representing a piece of human nature.…
