Lord Of The Flies Piggy Character Analysis

Improved Essays
Piggy is the type of person that is easily made fun of. The other boys see him as an easy target to harass and bully because of his appearance and his level of maturity. He is much more knowledgeable than everyone else on the island and he is the most like an adult. Naturally, if Piggy looked different and had a different name made up for him, he would have been the chosen leader. When the novel first started, the initial reaction to him was that he was the fat kid and he would be manipulated throughout the book. In chapter two of the book, Jack’s impression about Piggy is not very nice. He thinks that anything Piggy has to say is irrelevant. When Piggy wanted to speak because he had the conch, Jack put him down for it- “You’re hindering Ralph. You’re not letting him get to the most important thing” (Golding). They did not treat him like he was human, more like a toy. When the boys wanted to to light a fire, they used Piggy’s glasses, and Piggy tried to tell Jack that “…(they) couldn't keep a fire like that going, not if (they) tried" (Golding 42). The more that Piggy was excluded out of all the groups, if he ever had to go back into the real world, he would feel like that was how he was supposed to be treated- with no respect. …show more content…
Unlike the other boys on the island who are strong and healthy, “… (Piggy) was the only boy in (his) school what had asthma… and (he’s) been wearing specs since (he) was three” (Golding 9). Whenever he does not have these two essentials, he is not on the same level as the other boys. The boys like to show off their confidence, while Piggy was very hesitant to act because he “used to live with (his) auntie” and he never really got a strong influence from men (Golding 13). He was raised in a very feminine way, unlike the guys who always talk about their fathers. He respects the values of women which affected his reputation with the boys on the

(page 176) Piggy knows that Jack hates him, so when he calls Jack a “thief” in front of all his hunters, this symbolizes Piggy for standing up for himself. Eventually Piggy learns not to listen to others that disrespect someone, likewise not to pay attention to those who give back…

For the entire book, Piggy has been ignored and not treated that well. Nobody cared about him or his ideas, but when he is dead, Ralph notices and realizes how important he was. Piggy's symbolism has become quite clear over the course of the book; he represents civilization. Golding, I believe, was trying to show how people take civilization for granted and that no one really appreciates until it's gone. Now with Piggy gone, the entire island is chaos.…

Jack is a character of extreme leadership and strict authority while Piggy is a character that takes a backseat role and an is an easygoing character. It is likely that those who he learned under taught him to act like a leader much like Hitler in that Jack took power away from the other power on the island. Jack demonstrated his authority of Ralph by making his own rival tribe in hope that it could become more powerful than Ralph’s. Furthermore, Jack uses this power to assert his dominance over other kids on the island, including Piggy. But while most would think Jack would leave Piggy alone because he is not an immediate threat to his rule, Jack abuses Piggy verbally and physically.…

Along with that, he is clearly bothered for the “others” on the island and plays the role of an adult himself, though the irony is his concern over the absence of a commanding adult figure. Piggy, how much ever emotionless, is not self-centered, his selflessness appears throughout till the book till the end of his short life. “All...other kids,.... [they] must have got out [of the wrecked plane]... mustn't they,” Piggy reveals his concern for the other kids on the same plane as him, which communicates with the reader his kindly nature.…

In this situation, Jack also breaks one side of Piggy’s specs, almost completely jeopardizing their chances of rescue. His actions are corresponding to ones that are made in real life by me, though not as violent. Even actions such as breaking items of sentimental value out of rage resemble Jack’s violent outlash towards Piggy. Another reason for my sympathy is that Jack is, in a way, misunderstood. Initially, he does not want for anyone to die or get injured.…

(64, 65) Piggy would have been an extremely effective leader if it wasn’t for his physical appearance, but he still shows responsibility on the island. At the beginning of the novel, Ralph gives Piggy the responsibility of knowing all the names of the boys on the island and Piggy fulfills his responsibility: “We got most names……

In the beginning, the conch is found by Ralph in a beautiful lagoon. Ralph made the executive decision to blow the conch for meetings. Ralph soon becomes the authoritarian, but only with the magical conch in hand. Piggy screams to get the boys’ attention with the conch and says, “How can you expect to be rescued if you don’t put first things first and act proper” (45). Golding used Piggy’s discontent to show the importance of a civilized society and their initial mission of being rescued.…

The first reason i have to piggy being a nerd is, he is picked on by the other boys on the island, but isn't picked on by ralph or simon, i know, but he is picked on by the other other boys like jack and the other small children, on page 18 jack says “ Shut up fatty.” (Golding) so this is good enough evidence to show that he is picked on by other boys, there is other quotes but it’s eight in the morning and i don't feel like finding it in the book, but think about it, every nerd in every movie, book, or tv show is always picked on by the other teenagers. The second and most obvious evidence in the book that he is a nerd, is his asthma, all characteristic nerds in books and other media has asthma.…

“Ralph made a step forward and Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled the rocks. Piggy cried out in terror:” (71). This is the first time that Jack had actually physically harmed one of the other boys, and thus it is a clear sign of the changing society and a large step towards total savagery. Finally at the end of the book, Jack has developed a completely primitive and savage mindset, to a point where he attempts to kill Ralph.…

As always when one of us tries to speak we just get laughed at and told to sit down because we are younger and irrelevant I guess. There was times that Piggy would get ignored by Jack and the other boys which sort of are like the Nazis. Ever since the beginning of the book you can tell that Jack doesn’t like Piggy like in page 20 of the book where Jack calls a rude name to Piggy. This ties to where ever since the beginning of Hitler,he didn’t like the Jews and would blame them as the cause of the problems of Germany…
