In every book I have ever read in any English class, It was always because I had to read it. I never cared to think about the deeper meaning or if there was a lesson in the book and what it could have been. Now that I read books not only because it is part of my grade, but because I enjoy it, the deeper meaning of the book tends to pop out at me a little more. Life is filled with lessons, some obvious and some not. I would argue that Rudyard Kipling, the author of Captains Courageous, the book I read most recently, had a theme in his book that in the end, was a life lesson. While being stranded on an island with nothing but the group of boys from the plane crash, as expected the more masculine boys group together and lead. Piggy is not a part of that group, but wants to be. As time goes on and the time spent on the island increases, Piggy is still walked over, but he takes it. Jack, the more arrogant, selfish, and rude of the three has nothing nice ever to say to Piggy. Everytime Piggy would speak, Jack would not even take into account what he had to say and would automatically reply with “shut up fatty’. On the island the rule was, if one had the conch they had the right to speak, hands down that was to be respected. When all the boys were grouped together Piggy was trying to talk and added suggestions on what to do, he would simply just state his opinion and Jack would not have it. He spoke again and again, but Jack disregarded him as soon as possible, at that point Piggy had enough and says “Oh shut up! I got the conch! I got the right to speak!’ (William Golding 44). Piggy knew that if he did not stick up for himself no one else would, so he dug deep to find the courage to do so. As time when on and more time was spent on the island, Ralph, who was named the “chief”, became more reliant on Piggy for help and advice. Ralph knew Piggy was competent enough to help ensure they stayed alive on the island all because PIggy stuck it to Jack. If he never would have done so, who is to know what would happen. Since then Ralph has leaned on piggy for not only his opinion but for his brain and reassurance as well, Piggy was an intelligent boy, but no one would ever know due to the constant repression put on him by Jack. When Piggy did this, not only did he realize his own self worth, but he realized that he was as good as the rest of the boys and just as important as the rest no matter what they told
