The main thing that Ralph has always talked about was “fire” and that he “only wanted to keep up a fire” (170). Even though all he wanted to do was keep up a good fire no one really appreciated Ralph. The repetition of fire provides the reader with a sense of importance for the children's survival that there’s smoke in the air and they are saved. Golding repeats fire continuously throughout the book to stress that these kids need to be saved and are going to kill themselves if they don’t have any type of authority figure soon. The fire was huge in their rescue even though it wasn’t on purpose and notice how when there was an adult the children’s behaviors change and they become less barbaric. Therefor Golding uses repetition to plant the idea that in order for children to survive they need guidance while supplying the chaotic feeling throughout the peace.
In conclusion Golding uses literary devices like symbolism and repetition to convey the importance of authority in children’s lives and create a chaotic tone.
