William Goulding wrote the novel after being inspired by the world war and believed that the war occurred because people allowed their feelings and instincts to control them, resulting in the evil being within them being exposed towards one another, and he wrote the novel using young boys to show that such feelings and instincts are found in each and every individual despite age or race.

Ralph again shows another bad quality of a leader by being selfish, because Piggy mentioned the taking of names before but Ralph was not interested, he showed interest on another person’s opinion only when it suited him. ‘’Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things’’, (William Goulding, Lord of the flies, ch 1, p 28) Ralph said this to raise the idea of having a chief, involving all the followers and waiting to hear their views towards it, they all liked the idea and Roger came up with the idea that they should all vote for a chief.
