“Percival Wemys Madison. The Vicarage, Harcourt St. Anthony, Hants, telephone, tele-.”(86). After saying this Percival busts into tears. Percival saying this quote then crying is characterization because it shows how innocent and pure he is. Percival has been conditioned to say this since he was very young, in fact it came out with him not even thinking about it. As soon as Percival realises he has said this and that all this information is now pointless he can not help but wail for his old life back. Unfortunately, when Percival meets the sea captain and it looks like he will at last get to go home, he can not even remember his name! “I’m I’m-....... But there was no more to come. Percival Wemys Madison sought in his head for an incantation that had faded clean away.”(201). Percival forgetting his name is ironic because he is the one who often thought and cried for his old life he also gave the whole group a ton of his personal information in the previous quote. The most heart wrenching part of the book is here when Percival loses his identity. Percival can not remember who he is at all. Any sense of himself and his old life has been washed clean away, and all that's left is a ghost of what seems to be a scared little corrupt
