The Germans initial offensive (blitzcrieg) unified Britain as a nation, just like as the fires on the island brought everyone together. As Winston Churchill said after the initial German strike “Everyone feels now that, come what will, we are top dogs; the past week has shown that we shall win no matter what slight doubts there were before.” There was a fire that started to burn in the United kingdom right after the initial impact attack, that gave people hope for winning the war.
In the Lord of the Flies, the plane crash is there to represent the Blitzkrieg offensive. The crash brought the kids all together from all over the island and they started the signal fire as one. When Ralph orders the creation of the signal fire there is a surge of hope and energy on the island,”” … We can help them find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a signal fire,”
“A fire! Make a fire!”

“...It was aimed at putting war production out. You know, destroying war industries, shipping, transport, all this sort of thing” (Gardiner). When the Germans launched first attacks to the British homeland two years after their initial offensive it didn't impact the civilians much at first; this is because they only targeted British units. Eventually the Germans started bombing civilians as well which really brought down the morale as a country, but in the end the British were able to fend of the Germans, but at a great loss of

With the fall of France on 22 June 1940, came the shifting of Germany’s attention to the coast of the United Kingdom. Hitler’s strategic goals for the region were dependent on the defeat of Great Britain, the last remaining ally remaining to fight off the Nazi advance through Europe. With this goal came the revision of Great Britain’s strategy in the war, it was simply to survive. While Germany began its raid of the United Kingdom through the air, the British people took to the skies to defend their homeland, in what would be called the Battle of Britain and total war for the British population. Many leaders emerged to rally the people to combat the Nazi attacks, however, crucial to the British victory in the Battle of Britain was Air Chief…

The Blitz was a time in ww2 when the Luftwaffe (German Airforce) strategically bombed British cities, lasting from 7th September 1940 and 21 May 1941, a total of 57 consecutive days, destroying 60% of the houses in London. The reason of Hitler’s attack was to destroy and break the morale and spirit of the British people. For years the question whether the ‘Blitz Spirit’ of WW2 was real or a myth has split many different opinions , however I think that it was a myth. The ‘Blitz Spirit’ was the idea that the British, rich and poor had a positive outlook on the Blitz and were completely equal, however it is thought that that could be untrue, therefore a myth.…

Likewise, on the island in Lost, the survivors start to hear and see evidence of beasts living on the island with them. The beasts on the island symbolize the survivors’ fear of the island and the unknown surprises that may be on the island. Lastly, the island in Lord of the Flies represents freedom from the rest of society, “ ‘It’s a good island.…

When a group of boys are stranded on a deserted island with no adults, the boys become irritated with each other and start to become savages, and the items they hold dear turn into chaos as the boys turn into savages that know only destruction and death. Immediately, Piggy and Ralph, the first two boys that are introduced, find the conch in the water and use it to gather all the boys together, and the conch becomes vital for the boys to keep order and not turn into savages. As the chief of the boys’ civilization, Ralph recommends that the boys make a fire so that boats passing by can see the island and rescue them. The boys want to get off the island immediately after arrival, so Ralph recommends at the meetings that they talk about issues at, to use fire to create smoke so that boats would notice. When the boys first made the fire with Piggy’s glasses, they did not understand how much power it has and the flames burned a part of the island, which resulted in the death of the boy with a mulberry birthmark.…

The second symbol in Lord Of The Flies is the fire. The fire was meant for being a signal for ships or could even be turned into a weapon of destruction. When the fire was first introduced in the novel, it was used for a rescue signal "life became a race with the fire and the boys scattered through the forest to keep a clean flag of flame"(Golding 57). The fire is a sign of being rescued. It is important for the fire to stay burning and to get it to the highest location on the island so any passing boat could see it and rescue the boys.…

To what extent was the impact of war on civilians in Great Britain equal to its impact on civilians in Germany The extent of war on civilians is not equal to Great Britain as it is in Germany. The British bombing on the Germans had a lot more of an impact in terms of the civilian aspect, namely the cities of Dresden, which took place on the 13th of February 1940, Hamburg, which took place in July 1943 and Cologne, with the first bombing raid taking place on the 12th of May, and the most notable bombing taking place on the 30th of May. In total, the Germans faced 305,000 to 600,000 casualties as a result of the bombings. the bombings also did not help the social unrest that was intended by Harris and the British government. Probably one of the biggest failures in the bombings Overy lists was the attempt to have the German people despise their own government. However, Overy says that it actually had the exact opposite results that they had hoped. Instead of the bringing the people against the government, they actually united and stood with their government. There were a number of government agencies whose tasks were to follow effects of the bombing war waged on Germany.…
