They are forced together by a plane crash and must find a way to survive. Ralph has the ambition to be saved or rescued, so proceeds in following a more civil and organized method to achieve this. The quote “If we have a signal going, they'll come and take us off.” This quote demonstrates Ralph's ability to keep the group calm while still being dedicated to achieving his ambition of rescue. He proposes that the group shall create a hierarchy where people are divided into two classes, the “Biguns” and the “Littluns.” He assigns roles to each person so that the needs and wants of everyone are provided for in order to achieve this ambition of rescue. To achieve this ambition he talks about the importance to maintain freshwater, build shelters and keep the fire going openly with the group. The conch is used to assemble meetings where they can communicate as a whole and welcome ideas that are made by the people fairly. Ralph discusses the nature of the assembly being democratic, where the person holding the conch is therefore entitled to speak without interruption. This shows that Ralph doesn’t just use the conch to assist to his overall power, but also to encourage others to discuss ideas, even the timid Littluns. Within him though, he possesses an obsession to obtain leadership to gain power over the group. He displays an ambition of hunting to provide for the group over seeking rescue proposed by Ralph. It's important to note that jack role of the group was to hunt and provide for the people, but takes advantage of this responsibility by ignoring the ambition of Ralph which was to find rescue from a ship or plane. Jack understands that he cannot appeal to everyone’s wants because of the competition between his ambitions and Ralphs. Here is where there are conflicting ambitions, the ambition of Ralph to find rescue, and Jack's obsession with hunting. The Littluns are shown to be attracted to Jack knowing that he can provide for them, but fear the backlash of society if they choose to shift to Jacks side. This is shown in the quote “Hands up?” said Jack strongly, “whoever wants Ralph not to be chief?” The Littluns remain quiet at this point in time, but gradually trickle off to Ralph later on. Both Jack and Ralph's ambition are affecting the littluns. Deep down the littluns want to move to Jack because they see that he is able to provide for them through hunting means.
