In the novel the symbolism of war honestly doesn't change much when it eventually became the savagery of human nature. Later Simon realizes that the beast is actually ¨only us¨ and attempts to convey thoughts about ¨mankind's essential illness¨ (Doc F). Later on, when Simon finds the dead airman, he attempts to tell the others that ¨the beast is only human¨ (Doc F). The boys confuse Simon as the ¨beast¨ and attack him, Simon tried to flee but the others chased and killed him ¨There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws¨ (Doc E). The scared children who feared the ¨beast¨, in the end they became what had been terrorizing them for so long.
