Throughout the book, Engineers of Victory: The Problem Solvers Who Turned the Tide in the Second World War, by Paul Kennedy, he shows to the reader how the Second World War was won through many different perspectives. These perspectives include; different military strategies that show to the reader how the war was won and how. The main point that Kennedy tries to convey to the reader in my opinion is that World War II was not a general war but rather a saga of different parts coming together to shape into one massive conflict. Kennedy started out in the introductory chapter by describing what the book is going to cover and how it affected the war.…

Lord of the Flies contains an astounding amount of events that foreshadow other events. Foreshadowing plays an important role in the repertoire of literary devices and skills that are showcased and portrayed by the novel. In this novel, a group of schoolboys with ages ranging from six to twelve, find themselves stranded on a tropical, inhabited island, after the plane that was going to evacuate them to a safe place crashes. There is no adult supervision in the island, leaving the children to make decisions on their own, which may cause some struggles in the long run.…

    1. When the boys are stranded on the seemingly uncharted island, it becomes evident that a leader among the older boys must come forth and take control of the situation. Our protagonist, Ralph, represents the properly socialized and civilized young man capable of staying calm in the midst of crises. Ralph was raised on the traditional English beliefs of manner and composure, something he uses to assure the younger boys that they will be rescued, and in the meantime they can enjoy themselves on the tropical island. Ralph has the ability to use the conch shell to call all of the survivors together, a symbol of his authority and is the reason why he was elected to become chief of the boys.…

Chapter five of Lord of the Flies by William Golding is possibly my favorite chapter so far. It was easy to read, and it did not have any super intense vocabulary. The chapter also discussed many great parts of the story that were being pushed to the side to talk about other things. This discussion of leftover matters was brought together by Ralph’s assembly. As Ralph says in the beginning of the chapter, “This meeting must not be fun, but business” (65).…

William Golding was the best known for his novel and was also awarded the Booker Prize for his novel “Rites Of The Passage” in 1980. Working as a professor and later joining the army, much of Golding’s inspiration for novels came from his occupation, and this can tell us a lot about the cover. The cover distinctively illustrates a white beheaded pig with a brown bloody stick or rod of some sort, most likely a branch, viciously stuck up the head from the neck area. Additionally, the head is expelling lavish red blood from the right eye, and furious or miserable tears from the left eye, along with more blood from the mouth and neck section. Since the phrase “Lord of the Flies” represents the devil, the pig’s head on the stick exorcising blood symbolizes the Beelzebub, or generally, the force of evil that may occur in the novel. The cover may also represent savagery such as…

What intrigued most about 1984 is the symbolism it held. This is why I wanted to recreate a book cover that held a great amount of symbolism and a visual art piece that channels the many themes explored within the text. When writing 1984, I believe George Orwell’s style of writing and point in conveying actions were quite distinctive. His syntax gave off a tone of hopelessness and warning. A slow and fearful journey we follow Winston through that book…
