We’ll have to have ‘Hands up’ like at school….. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking” (33). By him saying this, it’s pretty clear that everybody begins to see the conch as having some sort of power, and with that power, Ralph is using it as an opportunity to create rules on the island and as a chance to allow the group to become civilized. As the novel continues, the symbolic-ness of the conch shell begins to progress. Now that everybody has realized that the conch shell has a significant amount of power, it begins to get fought over by the boys. The narrator explained, “There was a sound of brief tussle and the conch moved to and fro. You gimme the conch back!... He wrestled the conch from someone and sat down breathlessly” (90). By them fighting over not so much the conch itself, but the power it has, it shows that the boys do in fact realize what the conch holds, it shows how desperate the need for the conch is, and how the boys will try to do anything to get the conch for themselves. Piggy knows where they are, and knows the majority o how they get there, so he is able to piece together all the pieces and form some type of logical explanation as to why Ralph’s dad won’t rescue them. From this, it can be inferred that Piggy is probably the brightest of the stranded boys on the island, and his glasses help to set him apart from the others. He uses his glasses as a shield, and as a way of hiding behind everything going on. This is one of the reasons why Piggy’s intellect was never really used until it was the only thing certain people could depend on. When the boys were desperate to start a fire, they looked around and realized that Piggy had the possession of the thing that would help them out the most.
