In the beginning of the story, Ralph and Piggy find the conch shell in the lagoon. They blow into it and the noise simultaneously brings the boys together from all around the island for the first time. This happens many times throughout the story, the conch is the one and only item that can truly unite the boys. It also helps to keep the fighting to a minimum. Ralph tells the boys, “I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking,” the boys begin to argue with him, so he cuts them off saying, “And he won’t be interrupted” (Golding 33).
