In William Golding’s, “Lord of the Flies”, a conch represents an idea of democracy and order among the small society of the boys who have been stranded together on an island. The conch, which is a shell that is able to release a large calling is found by two boys, Ralph and Piggy. “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting- They’ll come when they hear us… That’s what you meant didn’t you? That’s why you got the conch out of the water?” (Piggy page 16). These two boys ultimately use conch by having Ralph blow on it while Piggy directed him on what to do in order to gather the rest of the stranded boys on the island to hold a meeting as you would in any democracy.
