Civilization has become second nature for humans. Ever since the beginning of time we have known how to create civilization and maintain it in everyday lives. This could become a problem for Ralph and company as they search for ideas to keep civilization alive and well on the abandoned island. When Ralph and Piggy find a conch near the lagoon, they decide this will be the cornerstone of the group and the hope to keep civilization has been found. In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, the conch is the only thing that holds the group together by bringing democracy and sophistication; without it they will not survive.
The conch keeps the group together. It is the reason things stay tied together for as long they do. In the group the older boys are the ones that mainly do the talking with the conch because they are older and are more mature. When Piggy finds the conch on the beach shortly after they find each other, Ralph makes it appoint to use it as a calling device to see if there is any other life on the deserted island and hopefully other boys like themselves. “We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us” (Golding 16). This is a representation of forming a civilization. When they go to the top of the mountain to make things right with each other’s group, the conch gets destroyed during a fight along with Piggy’s death. “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist” (Golding 181). This officially marks the end of law, order, and civilization between the boys and their groups.
