Jack Vs Ralph Leadership Analysis

“Lord of the Flies” by William Golding is a book about a group of British schoolboys who have crashed, due to an attack on an evacuation plane, and are left stranded on an unknown island. With no grown-ups, no rules and no one to say what's what, the boys must fend for themselves. After Ralph, an older boy and his newfound sidekick, Piggy find a conch on the beach and blow it to alert any other survivors on the island, the boys realize that running free with no authority would not work. In an attempt to create some order, the boys decide that it is a good idea to pick an older boy to lead the rest of them. The two leaders that seem the most likely are Ralph and Jack. Ralph, the boy that blew the conch was chosen as the leader due to his clear leadership skills. Later on in the book, Jack leaves the group to become his own leader. Both boys had a chance to be a leader, showing qualities of a powerful leader. Ralph and Jack compete from the beginning, each exhibiting different leadership qualities, But it is clear to see which boy is the best leader due to his leadership style. Ralph, over the course of the book, had attempted to create a society based on survival and being rescued while Jack is more focused on enjoying the island.

Comparing the two, Ralph had the most control over the boys and the most sensible ideas of how to survive on the island. On the other hand, Jack was more into “fun and adventure”, causing utter chaos and even death as the boys progressed. The final issue that Jack created that truly showed Ralph’s superior quality of leadership is the mass fire that Jack started in order to trap jack. this is the best example of Jack not caring about what he was doing, he just wanted fun. Not knowing if they would be rescued, Jack carelessly set the whole island on fire, all to kill one of their own
