Like the previous chapter explained, it was the help of others that helped to keep Joey alive. With all the evidence, we can see that without others, people are not able to survive. We can see this through how young Trooper Warren saved Joey’s life countless times, how Emilie the farm girl provided comfort to the horses while not working, and how Joey’s best war friend kept him thriving mentally as well. During the war, what kept Joey and Topthorn, Joey’s war friend, alive was the thought of getting home to little Emilie that would tediously care for them. Joey had said, “For us, it was the hope of how we were taken care of back that evening in our stable and that little Emilie would be there to comfort and love us.” (Morpurgo, 1982, p. 33). This goes to show that another person kept Joey alive. Although her impact didn’t keep Joey moving throughout the whole war like Albert did, it was just as important to help Joey going throughout the day. She provided the strength, mental and physical. Another piece of evidence that supports this is the in-depth detail of all the tasks Emilie would do in the barn. There are paragraphs and paragraphs of the things that Emilie did in the barn- from caring to the slightest bruises to always making sure there was plenty of fresh, cold water. (Morpurgo, 1982, p. 32). It is obvious that her deep passion for the horses helped the both of them. While doing the grueling work of war, it was at home where Joey made the recovery.
