This novel takes place on a tropical island where a plane filled with English school boys crashes. Although the time of the crash and reasoning isn’t elaborated on, I theorized that because the book was written shortly after world war two had ended the book probably takes place sometime during the war. Considering that and the plane being ablaze as it crashed into the water, I believe it may have been being mistaken as an enemy aircraft and gunned down. The author begins the novel by describing the plane crash and distinguishing the main characters, but quickly establishes the idea of a social pyramid; the able-bodied boys like Ralph and Jack on top, and the less robust boys like Piggy at the bottom.
