Lord Of The Flies Chapter 2 Summary

In the novel ¨Lord of The Flies¨, author William Golding suggests many different meanings with his choice of the words and phrases he uses in the chapter titles of his novel. The word choice of each title depicts what might happen in each section of the story, but it also gives the reader a chance to interpret the significance of the chapter’s meaning. The title of chapter 2 is “Fire on the Mountain”. Out of context, fire is denoted as a state, process, or instance of combustion in which fuel or other material is ignited and combined with oxygen, giving off light, heat, and flame. One issue that comes up is the question of how they can be rescued from being trapped on an island with no land in sight, one idea that comes to mind is to create a smoke signal, created by the fire, so that if any forms of life come by, a potential rescuer can see them. They decide to create this signal on the top of a mountain, which is the broad reason why this chapter title was chosen. However, the chapter title may not seem all black and white, but has a deeper meaning behind it. This “Fire on the Mountain” is the representation of the major issue that these kids are dealing with and is there own personal Fire on the Mountain. One example of how this is shown is when Piggy and Jack are talking when the fire is being made for the first time. Piggy had just said, “We haven’t made a fire” he said, “what’s any use. We couldn’t keep a fire like that going, not if we tried,” A fat lot you tried, said Jack contemptuously. “You just sat.” (Golding 44). This example shows the representation of how the fire is a challenge to achieve, and how there is clearly a conflict between some of the
