After hiding in the jungle and finding the sows head Ralph goes back the Jacks camp in the dark. Eric and Sam are guarding the entrance and tell Ralph that Jack will be hunting for him the next day. They give Ralph food but won’t go with him. Ralph hides in the jungle until he smells smoke because Jack is trying to smoke him out by setting the jungle on fire. Ralph runs for his life away from the fire and the hunters. When he reaches the beach he rolls on the sand and sees a naval officer looking down at him. Ralph is relieved to be rescued before he is killed. The huge fire must have drawn the officer to the island. At first the office thinks that the boys are only playing games.
