Almost anyone can relate to a time when they acted impulsively. Maybe they were super mad so they smashed a vase or maybe they were so happy they ended up speeding 20 miles per hour over the speed limit and got ticketed. It is funny how emotions can either make people act out of character, or seriously enhance somebody 's character. For example, in Lord of the Flies there is a scene when Jack suggests hunting the little kids for practice. Following this, Jack chooses to start jabbing and poking Robert, one of the kids, with a stick. Generally Ralph, a character who is suppose to represent reason and rationality, would immediately put an end to this. It obviously is not humane or even logical to practice hunting techniques on a child. However, in this chapter even Ralph lets emotions control him. The author states that “Ralph, carried away by a sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric’s spear and jabbed at Robert with it” (174). This is a perfect example where Ralph acts completely out of character and decides to listen to his impulse instead of logic. As for Jack, torturing Robert is a little crueler than Jack usually behaves, however it is not completely out of Jack 's character to do this. Another example in everyday life of impulsive behavior is crimes of passion. A crime of passion is usually when a very violent crime is committed because of rage and/or impulsive behavior. While crimes of passion are an extreme example of impulsive behavior, it is still a very valid demonstration of how emotions can control how a person
