“A change in lifestyle could bring healthy pressure to bear on those who wield political, economical and social power.”-Pope Francis”
Generally when someone is in control it can either have a negative or positive outcome depending on the situation. Power is an accomplishment, everyone wants to achieve it,although many cannot administrate it. In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a feud between the two main characters, Jack and Ralph, who both individually have their own form of power in different perspectives. The rising of the actions engage throughout the book as votes elect Ralph as chief, dictation from jack towards the hunters and the symbolism of the conch and the Lord of the Flies. This is because, when the boys accomplish managing to capture one of the biggest animals on the island and being able to kill it definitely brought Jack’s confidence higher in feeling like the bigger person. They cut the sow to have just the head remaining, while Jack orders the boys to place it on one end of a sharpened stick in the earth and the other sharpened end attached to the head of the sow. “Ram one end in the earth” ( page 137) giving it the name “The Lord of the Flies”. Reason behind the sow head to be placed on a stick is to symbolize the evil that is in every human. This is because, offering to the beast represents the evil that Golding felt was in all of mankind. After the peace offering of the beast, “This head is for the beast. It’s a gift” (page 137) says Jack as he begins to see himself as a role model for the other boys and feels the power in himself after the two savages refer to him as chief “ The chief has spoken”(page 141).The representation of the head is not just a performance, but the evil inside all human beings. It must be fought to prevent human civilization descending into savagery. As certain objects on the island are used to gain power for both civilized reasons, such as Ralph’s use of the conch, Jacks use of the idea is the beast.Originally, Jack intends to use the “Lord of the Flies” in representing as a hero for the boys, after all they are all frightened by the thought of the rumoured beast set on the island. “Maybe there is a beast” (page 89). Reason being as to why Jack uses the “Lord of the Flies” to control the boys is because the head represents a threat to the other boys and strikes fear in them. Like any other scare tactics, it is not important rather a threat existing, it is significant for leaders to convince their followers that there is simply no need to feel fear. “I’ve been all over this island.

As the story proceeds Jack's character becomes more and more savage leaving behind the morals he once obtained. In the beginning Jack tries to settle the group by telling everyone that “we’ve got to have rules and obey them [a]fter all we’re not savages, we’re English”; and as time passes Jack changes his physical appearance by "[painting] [his] face" to display his superiority to the rest of the boys (Golding 42/74). Jack starts off with a high set of morals, cautious of becoming savage but after some time Jack results in the one to start the savage movement amongst the boys on the island. The evolution of Jack leads him to become a display of violence, domination and savagery to the boys in direct correlation to a Hobbesian view point that without a government man will become savage. Jack’s rush of domination leads him to “stab at Ralph's chest with his spear” (Golding 177).…

All the fear the boys have is from the fact that they are alone on an island without any adults, rules, society, without anything. They are just little kids and do not know how to survive alone. Along with the loneliness, there is the speculation of a terrifying beast. This leads to Jack becoming a savage and doing what he wants despite establishing rules and a leader at the start.…

Good vs. Evil In Lord of the Flies, William Golding uses the symbols of Jack and Ralph, to portray the theme good vs. evil. Throughout the story Jack is shown as an evil, controlling, heartless, and savage like person. In the text it states, “Jack himself shrank at this cry with a hiss of indrawn breath, and for a minute became less a hunter than furtive thing, ape-like among the tangle of trees” (Golding 49). Jacks actions convey him as more animal-like than human.…

The Lord of the Flies Opinion Essay The copper face glimmered with a thin layer of soil, sweat, his bronze skin turned to a scarlet and his rough voice bellowed with rage as he swore to hunt the animals of the island, illustrated the carefree environment, he would have, and hypnotized the listeners with his audacity as he persuaded them that he would slay their beast. A good leader must have something to enchant his followers, and Jack had his persuasion in killing the beast. I agree with the statement, “A good leader must have charisma,” because in the Lord of the Flies Jack earned the respect of the boys’ and became their leader by convincing them that he would provide meat, fun, and safety from killing the beast. Jack gained admiration from the boys’ and took Ralph's place when he coaxed them that he would provide meat with the help of his hunters.…
