In the book Lord of the Flies there were differing examples of leadership. The core idea of leadership is to create opportunities for people to excel. The three leaders that hold a presence in the novel are: Ralph, Piggy, and Jack. Each leader had qualifications that made them better leaders than others, according to society. Throughout the book the central leader was Ralph. Society will automatically look at Ralph and assume him to be the great leader. Society takes the athletic and charismatic people and puts them into the leadership box. However, once they dig under the surface of his leadership, its ineffectiveness shines through. Jack already has a group of people following him, the choir, and he’s left in charge of that group. At times Jack can be seen as selfish. When Jack, Ralph, and Simon explore the island they come across a pig, and Jack fails to kill it. This failure drives his character throughout the whole novel. Jack becomes extremely selfish in his attempt to redeem himself. When Jack fails several other times he even brings the rest of the hunters into his attempts to kill the pig. He makes all the hunters wear face paint in order to disguise themselves so that they can sneak up on the pigs more easily. At one point he asks who thinks Ralph shouldn’t be leader anymore and he’s the only one who spoke out about the matter. While his leadership qualities appear to be significantly lower than Ralph’s he does make good statements that provide opportunities for others to succeed. “Listen, all of you. Me and my hunters, we’re living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join my tribe come and see us.” (140) It’s not until Jack and the hunters leave Ralph’s group that he’s able to show leadership qualities. While Piggy doesn’t provide leadership qualities to Ralph, he does provide a lot of the ideas. Piggy isn’t chosen to be the leader because he isn’t fit, charismatic, loud, or socially attractive. Leaders aren’t chosen if confidence isn’t exuded constantly. Ralph picks up on this, and takes the conch. Ralph’s assuming of the conch allows him to become a leader while stepping all over Piggy. People have already knocked him down due to physical properties that are seen as disadvantages in society such as his being overweight or his specs. Whenever Piggy tries to speak up, people will speak over him and say what he was about to say while taking the credit for his thought. Piggy could have great leadership abilities if he wasn’t written out of the leadership group (his death could also be an example of this) due to what society tells us is and isn’t a good
