Lord Of The Flies Allegorical Essay

In the allegorical, English, adventure novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding utilizes an English band of marooned boys to portray directly the dynamic effects that human nature can have on civilization. In a world plagued with war, a plane carrying a group of British boys crash lands on a deserted island. With no “mature authority” to direct their decisions, the boys are left to govern themselves. The boys use the “rule of the conch,” to delegate leadership to the protagonist of the novel; Ralph. Trouble soon ensues as the boys become antagonized by a theoretical “beast” that coexists on the island with them. This fear proves further conflict in the latter parts of the novel. In an attempt to be productive and seek escape from the island, Ralph instructs the construction of a signal fire, created with Piggy’s glasses. This fire causes contention among the boys as they separate into two different “social groups”; the uncivilized hunters, lead by Jack, and the civilized intellectuals, lead by Ralph. I thoroughly enjoyed Lord of the Flies and all the hidden symbolism within it. The allegorical aspect utilized by Golding contributed to a relatable connection established between me, the reader, and the characters in the novel. The underlying theme of human instinct and lack of civilization truly fascinated me, as the same principles can apply themselves to modern life. As two varying forms of ineffective leadership presented themselves, I was completely engaged in the plot and the effects that different hierarchies would have on the society each one created. With a great plot, fascinating characters, relatable themes, and an interesting allegory I positively enjoyed my journey through the pages of Lord of the
