Ralph picked up his stick and prepared for battle. But what could they do? It would take them a week to break a path through the thicket; and anyone who wormed his way in would be helpless. He felt the point of his spear with his thumb and grinned without amusement. Whoever tried that would be stuck, squealing like a pig. They were going away, back to the tower rock. He could hear feet moving and then someone sniggered. There came again that high, bird-like cry that swept along the line. So some were still watching from him; but some-? The footsteps declined and Ralph peered around. His pounding heart echoed in his ears as he took a step towards the shore. The trees seemed mourn as the wind blew it side to side. The clouds covered the island in a layer of darkness. Ralph flinched from the sudden image of Jack’s face covered in clay. Someone that seemed so indistinguishable. From a distance, an object steadily bobbed up and down the horizon. Ralph recognized the familiar shape once before when him, Piggy, Maurice, and Simon were sitting in the pool; a ship. Ralph frantically ran into the water but found that the betraying waves were pushing him back. ‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!’ Ralph turned around to see a row of hunters standing before him and Jack in the middle holding a spear. He desperately tried to escape the wrath of the waves but was greeted by a spear in the ribs, a few inches away from the heart. The body flopped onto the water and the blood stained the sea for a brief moment before scattering. Jack retrieved the body and placed it on the sand. Staring down at Ralph’s body, he noticed the rapid breathing that would soon come to an end. One of the hunters came forward and gave Jack his knife that twinkled under the dim light. He placed the knife by Ralph’s neck.
