As humans, our family and environment at large influence us. Our experiences form the building blocks of who we become, and this is particularly true for artists and poets alike. It is not unusual for artists to draw inspiration from their surroundings be it natural, societal, and even political. One of such artists who in my opinion has been greatly influenced by his surrounding is Li-Young Lee. The environment one lives in, whether it is the setting or the people around us, is influential and can change one's life for the good or the bad. Specifically, Gus Van Sant, the director of the movie, Good Will Hunting urges surrounding yourself with well educated, advanced people in contrast to low life people who hold you back because doing so will enable you to express yourself, step out of your comfort zone and voice emotions that allow you to have a fulfilling life. When you visualize kids today, what do you picture? Do you see them frolicking outside with sunshine hitting their skin and imagination pumping through their veins? Or do you see them slouching on a sofa, glued to a bright screen, and with a glaze over their eyes? We often criticize those children on tablets and smartphones for not being outside much, but we are just as guilty of going outdoors less ourselves.
