Looking Over Dr Seuss Cartoon Analysis

Improved Essays
Looking over Dr. Seuss political cartoons I have found the cartoons have many different themes. The Veteran Recalls the battle of 1942 and the Cartoons that encourage you to buy savings bonds are just a couple. The cartoons I reviewed about isolationism seem to glorify America's choice for isolation. All the cartoons I reviewed about Nazism and Racism to me portrayed America to be a very racist country. This cartoon tells us that America thought the white race was superior to everyone else, and that on the eve of World War II the mindset of America was terribly messed up. The Dr. Seuss cartoon I have chosen to write about is the Governor of Georgia holding a whip with a black bird on his shoulder, standing in a box marked Georgia.the captions

Looney Tunes Television is a prime example for stereotypes, especially in cartoons. For instance, in the Looney Tunes cartoon, Horse Hare, Bugs Bunny is hired by the USA cavalry as a sergeant to protect an army fort from the Indian army led by Yosemite Sam. Because of the use of derogatory terms and Native American stereotypes, this cartoon is rarely ever broadcasted on television because of ethnographic stereotyping. The Indians also speak in stereotypical broken English (“Red whiskered white man big loud mouth braggart”; “Me wouldn’t like to be me tonight”).…

The cartoon I am analyzing is wildcard #1 of Constitutional Underpinnings. This cartoon symbolizes how our federal government is set up. In football, linebackers of opposing teams always tackle each other. This represents clashing of the Congress and the executive branch. Not only that, but in football games, sometimes one side overpowers the other.…

In the background of the cartoon, behind the various people observing the monument of Hitler and Hirohito, a flag pole can be seen, where the American flag is flying under a flag with a swastika on it, the flag of the Nazi…

Peter Bagge’s Hate comics were published as the underground comics movement was ending and a new alternative comics movement was taking shape. While the issues of Hate give all the appearances of being geared towards a male audience, the exclusive alternative nature of the comics allowed for a significant male and female audience that allowed readers to identify themselves within the characters’ self-critical reflection and distain for mainstream media and peoples characterized their internal monologues. By creating a persona in the stories’ text and within the editor and letter spaces that embraced some of the misogyny and patriotism that Buddy satires while embracing, Bagge was able to maintain the ironic filter of alternative comics that…

People who disseminate information through media are in possession of one of the most influential tools in society. Popular cartoonists fall under this category, as they can project their biased and personal perspectives on reality. “What political cartoonists portray may be an imaginary situation in allegory or a figure greatly distorted by caricature, but to the artists this is the essence of what is actually happening” (Charles Press, The Political Cartoon) Many cartoonists truly believe that their “distortion” of reality captures the reality everyone else is experiencing. Therefore, images circulated in society have the potential to convey opinions and stereotypes.…

Widely considered to be America’s first political cartoon, “Join, or Die” was created as an influence to colonial citizens during the French and Indian War. Benjamin Franklin, the creator of “Join, or Die”, featured his cartoon on May 9, 1754 in the Pennsylvania Gazette newspaper. Franklin’s cartoon proved to be rhetorically effective by his usage of symbolism, application to all three points on the rhetorical triangle, and his appeal to ethos, logos, and pathos. During Franklin’s era, there was a myth that a severed snake would come back to life if the pieces were put together before sunset. The cartoon depicts the early American colonies as a snake divided into eight segments, each segment symbolized a colony.…

Groening picked the characters of the Simpsons by using people he grew up with. The parents in the Simpsons are named Homer and Marge, the same name that Groening's parents have. He named Lisa and Maggie after his two younger sisters. Groening thought it would be too obvious if he named the oldest son after himself, so Groening decided to name the last child Bart which is an anagram of brat. Homer's father also received the same name as Groening's grandfather, Abraham.…

There has been great debate over the difference between the surrealist and the avant-garde, and whether or not they are simply different branches of the same movement, that surrealism is just a romanticised extension of the avant-garde. André Breton, the movement’s considered leader, regarded surrealism as a belief in superior forms of reality in his 1924 Surrealist Manifesto, and irrespective of more contemporary arguments over the exact definition or difference, was above all explicit in his assertion that Surrealism was a revolutionary movement. It is challenging to define the avant-garde, due to its heavy reliance on the self and the psychological nature of man, as opposed to physical aesthetics or a standard chain of events. Linda Williams’…
