Josie ‘s nonna was the main instigator of bringing the italian culture into her family, so nonna plays a big role towards what she thinks of her culture. Josies relationship with her nonna was initially poor as she had never forgiven her for abandoning her teenage pregnant mum and lying about her mother’s father and she saw her to be old fashioned, nosey, loud and obnoxious- the typical ‘wog’ . Josie’s attitude displayed embarrassment towards her nonna as she acted in rebellious ways to prevent even the thought of becoming the stereotypical italian female. This determination stemmed from her education and desire to step away from her Italian responsibilities and life, breaking away from her family and their narrow mindedness but also the entire culture.
