Published in March 2005 by Dutton Juvenile, this would be the first book he would publish. During the week of July 29, 2012, Looking for Alaska hit New York Times best seller list at number ten. The book takes place in Alabama at Culver Creek Preparatory High School. Narrator, Miles Halter, leaves his what little of a life he has in Florida to attend his junior year at a boarding school to “start seeking a Great Perhaps”(Pg.5). Chip also known as The Colonial because he is the mastermind behind all of Alaska’s pranks, he is a very straight forward type of person thats short and muscular. The Colonial gives Miles the nickname “Pudge” because he is very tall and slim. The Colonial then introduces him to his friends Alaska Young and Takumi. Alaska is an attractive girl but has many emotional problems. Takumi is a Japanese student. The first time Miles ever sees Alaska he's captivated. Alaska makes fun of him for memorizing peoples last words but goes on to tell him about Simon Bolivar’s last words which were “Damn it, how will I ever get out of this labyrinth!”(Pg. 19). He asks what the labyrinth is and she tells him that its a mystery. The first night at Culver Creek, Miles was kidnapped out of his bed by the Weekday Warriors. The Weekday Warriors are a group of students that do not get along with the Colonial and his friends and constantly have prank wars against each other. The principle at Culver also known as The Eagle by the students, is very strict on watching the students and making sure they follow the rules. The three biggest offenses you can commit at Culver: being naked in bed together, drinking, …show more content…
The group decided to camp out at the barn while the prank went underway. That night, while they were all drinking and smoking Alaska becomes intoxicated. She tells them her mom died from an aneurysm right in front of her when she was eight. She had no clue what was happening and didn't call 911, she was scared and now feels very guilty about it. Pudge thinks that her mother’s death is what makes her impulsive and rash. The prank ends successfully the next morning. To celebrate, Alaska and The Colonial drank every night of the next week. The last night of their celebrations, Alaska dares Pudge to hook up with her. While they were making out, Alaska falls asleep and Pudge tells her he loves her. In the middle of the night the pay phone in the hallway rings and Alaska wakes up to answer it. She returns a minute later sobbing saying she messed up and forgot something and needs to go. Even though she's still very drunk, neither of them stop her. The next morning the Eagle calls all the students to the gym for a meeting. He tells them that Alaska died the night before in a car accident, she was on the highway and hit a police car that was stopped on the scene of a jackknifed truck. She was intoxicated and died instantly. They went on an investigation to figure how and why this happened, and figure the only way it could

By interpreting the author’s motivations through a Psychological Lens, it is clear that John Green’s childhood and the challenges he faced during it, show the comfort in his writing, through the concepts of protagonists, travel, and escape. When a reader reads Looking For Alaska and Paper Towns by John Green, it is evident that both books are extremely similar: not only do their protagonists have similar motives and traits, but also the concepts of travel and escape are noticeably similar between both books. These similarities show that John Green has trouble stepping out of his comfort zone and enjoys writing plots of the same sort of background. These similarities are shown just through the storylines of two books. Looking For Alaska is…

The nature of discovery as a transformative process exemplifies the unique attributes of mankind, through the ability to shift or challenge our perspectives of an individual and our society. Whilst discoveries may be pleasing, it may also be provocative, in that an individual's values and ideas are confronted and challenged. This notion is explored by the SBS documentary, "Go Back to Where You Came From” directed by Ivan O’Mahoney and the novel, "Looking for Alaska" by John Green in which the protagonists are further challenged by entering unexpected worlds in which each individual has the choice to transform their personal perspective. Although set in completely different contexts, both texts portray the ways discoveries may devastate an individual but also become the positive effect in the future and help in rediscovering previously held opinions and perceptions.…
