SETTING
The story begins in Florida and then shifts to Birmingham, Alabama where Mile’s new boarding school, Culver Creek Preparatory School, is located. The novel is takes place between 2004 to 2005.
PLOT
One of the most significant events in the book was the death of Alaska Young. Although the book was based and narrated by Miles, the storyline seemed to always focus on Alaska’s humor, ways of thinking, and the love that Mile’s had for her. When Alaska dies, it affects all of the characters in the novel and their actions as well. Alaska's death causes other significant events to occur. For example, to gain some closure, Mile’s pulls off this elaborate prank in front of the whole school to commemorate the death of the girl he loved. That event was significant because its at that moment when Mile’s realizes all of the friends he has and really develops himself as a character in the story. …show more content…
When reading this novel, it is organized by each event or new day starting with however many days before a specific date. This gives you the feeling of never knowing what you are actually reading up to which gives you that anxious feeling and makes you want to read more. If there were to be a weakness in the storyline, it would have to be pacing of events in the book. To elaborate, there should have been a little more detail for the big events like the night at the barn when Alaska is talking about her family; some of the storyline seemed too vague from time to
