The story begins introducing Miles, who decides to leave his home in Florida to go to Culver Creek High School in Alabama as a rising junior. There he meets his roommate Chip, known as “The Colonel”, who gives him the nickname “Pudge” and introduces him to his friends Takumi and Alaska Young. He announces Alaska Young has died in a car accident. The boys are devastated at the news, unsure of how she seemed to be alright one moment and gone the next. Pudge and the Colonel both feel guilt, blaming themselves for letting her go out drunk and upset while not questioning her once. The two dissolve away from academics and friends, ignoring Takumi and Lara (she and Miles had dated for a day or so, courtesy of Alaska), while trying to find reasoning for her death. They call Alaska’s boyfriend Jake, whom they found out she was on the phone with that night, steal a breathalyzer from The Eagle to determine how drunk she was, and come up with theories. Still, neither are satisfied with their guesses.
Though unable to substantiate Alaska’s death, they reconnect with old friends, and together decide to pull a memorial prank for her. Pudge got his father to lie to The Eagle, pretending to be a professor who would speak on “Speaker Day”, a day where each class has someone of a higher status speak to the kids. The group hires a male stripper as the professor, and amidst his speech, pulls off the greatest prank to ever occur at Culver
