Reflective Essay: The Joy Of Trail Riding

Looking for a new horse can be quite a challenge for some people. Whether they’re looking for a performance horse, a trail horse, a companion, or a lawn ordainment it all depends on many different attributes. In my life I have rode quite a variety of horses. I was first trained in English riding where I showed in local horse shows and 4-H. Soon after I was trained to jump small jumps. I then moved on to western riding where I continued to show along the way. Along with western riding I did my favorite kind of riding, trail riding. Where we went for weekends of camping and trail riding. Trail riding, to me, is above pleasure showing, jumping, driving, speed events, and halter classes. A horse’s desired disposition should be that it is relaxed, respectful, and has desire. A relaxed horse includes a horse that will not overreact at everything they see. They won’t bolt and try to escape something new, but rather just be alert or not care at all. Of course this also comes with time and proper desensitizing. They should show desire to learn new things and have the “want” to do whatever they can to make the rider happy. The horse should also be respectful of the rider and not push them around. Another important aspect is for a prospect is good conformation. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but the sire and dam should defiantly have nice conformation. This way the horse can withstand different terrains without consistently tripping over themselves. Both conformation and disposition is very important to me as I search for a two year old. Another desired attribute is an athletic horse. An athletic horse is preferred in order to handle different terrains. They should move fluently and with ease. Whether is up and incline or down a steep slope a horse that I look into must be able to handle it. The horse should be able to stop and turn easily when they move on tight trails where there isn’t much room for misplacement of a hoof. I would also prefer a horse that is good leaded and not falling out of lead for comfort and
