Looking Backward: A Short Story

I am not a coward. I am not afraid of anything or anyone, nothing can intimidate me. So maybe thats why I was always picking fights, and it could be over stupid reasons like cutting me in the food line, or taking my only pair of wool socks. Yes the orphanage was warm and I sometimes had food to eat, but that didn't stop me from leaving the prison cell. It wasn't home, it was far from it. Home was warm and happy, family sitting around a warm fire, cooking some amazing stew in a pot, and everyone loved you no matter what you did. I don't know if thats true, but thats what I always thought it to be. I don't know for sure because I never had a loving family, I was given orphan/house servant life style just to support myself, and some of the money …show more content…
I continued to wait to be called for. The masters youngest daughters favorite passing time was ordering me around, but today she was out on a trip to see her betrothed so I am “relaxing”. “He may not be dead, but he has lost the words on his tongue, he does not call orders or declare wars anymore, thats his wife Isabelle’s job.” Audrey said with a as matter of fact tone. Yes it was true, our dear king was speechless and his wife took over most of his duties. She is not ugly, but she's not attractive to my taste. Yet she still is a good queen, hey just look at the new bakery, its better then ever. The maids continued to talk “You are a liar Bee, the witch never lets anyone see her and if they do then she either kills them or turns them into wolves.” Wolves, witches, death? sounds like a bedtime story gone wrong. “Well then lets ask a man that, shall we?” Bee said with two long strides in my direction. She turned to face me then asked the question. “Hayden, if you ever got the chance to kill the witch in the woods would you take it?” Bee asked with such confidence you would forget that she was only a 43 year old frail and weak woman. “Yes, but it would have to be a good cause.” I …show more content…
So one day he recruited all his best men to venture into the forest and take the witches power. When they arrived the king said “Any fools who wish to turn back, do so now, for once we are in there, theres no going back.” six men left and the rest followed their king into the woods. Then they came upon a wounded wolf, who was hit with a arrow. The king passed the wolf and moved on, he then looked into a bush and saw a pair of pale blue eyes. As his men who survived said, “The king has lost his words and his will to sing, the evil doing has been done by the witch in the woods.” “Did that really happen, to the king I mean?” Ander asked when I had finished. “I guess so. After all his wife is in control of the kingdom now.” “I think the witch isn't bad, I think she just likes to be alone and hates when she is interrupted.” Ander said with a yawn and turned over then closed his eyes. He had a point, maybe she wasn't all that bad, maybe she was actually a good person yet, everyone saw her as a evil villain because she could manipulate snow and could take your speech. What am I saying, of course she was evil, why am I listening to a 7 year olds thoughts. I need to

The fear of the unknown generates the hatred and violent nature of humans. The desperation for a plausible explanation of a specific occurrence potentially causes a misinterpretation. Thus, creating monsters like vampires, werewolves, and witches, creates a scapegoat for a society that blindly accepts other’s belief as their own. Although witches are humans, they are considered to be creatures of the night for they worship the devil. The societal portrayal of witches specifically introduces only female figures as a satanic worshipper who lure and corrupt men.…

There is an infamous trait that many believe is a core part of human nature; humans only act in self interest. John Mellencamp, a well known American rock singer-songwriter, once said, “When you live in hysteria, people start thinking emotionally.” What he is essentially saying is that when people are a part of an environment where emotions (typically fear or anger) are suddenly heightened, they start to behave in an uncontrolled way. In such a case, emotions can become so strong that they can cause people to lose sight of reality and their morals. This is evident when one stops taking the time to think about the things they say and lets their feelings dictate their actions, eventually coming to a point where right from wrong can become indistinguishable. The meaning of this quote can be used as a description of the way society was set up in the late…
