Looking Back Research Paper

Looking Back As I ponder on the assignments I have accomplished this semester and how far I have come simply amazes me. I was not prepared in the beginning for this course to be as difficult as it was. People often think going into a class that it should be easy since they did well in high school. That simply is not the case. No matter what class I apply for in the future I have learned to go in to it with a different attitude that I do not know everything because I have forgotten many things since high school. Looking back on this course in reflection I realize the difficulty I had with punctuation/grammar, organization skills, and procrastination in completing the assignments. From the beginning of the course until now my punctuation/grammar skills have improved a great deal. I still have a ways to go on improving and mastering that skill, but I have always had difficulty in that area. My first essay that I completed had a tremendous amount of punctuation errors, run on sentences, and word choice errors. This was not a very good thing considering my first essay was barely two pages. As the class went on and we completed more assignments, as well as quizzes I began to see improvements …show more content…
In fact that was what my first essay was about. I always see the deadline is a ways off so I continue putting it off because I have other things going on around me. Then before I know it my deadline is up and I am scrambling around frantically to complete everything that needs completed. This is never a good thing to do with any aspect in life. During this course I realized quickly I could not procrastinate all the time. I did some things, but some I did not. I never put off taking the quizzes because those were my strengths in this class. My attitude has evolved since this course that if I start early my mind is not so rushed and I can think more clearly, therefore, my essays are

My essays have improve over the semester, because now I know what mistakes I should be aware of committing. Also because I was able too look back in my whole process and argumentative essay and noticed the insufficient amount of detail and support I was providing. As a writer I feel that I need to focus in writing strong thesis statements that are going to capture the readers attention. I also need to pay more attention when it comes to developing an essay because I tend to leave out important information that’s going to make my essay…

Rewind 1950 years. At this time, a movement involving only a handful of nations was gaining strength. A people that were discriminately called Christians were spreading their ideas and experiences. These people were looked down upon, persecuted, and hated by the majority around them. They preached something entirely different than what the rest of the world had heard before: a message of love and grace and acceptance no matter the circumstance.…

Regardless, I do wish that I would have started outside of class earlier, so that I could have spent more time for editing and checking for details. Time management was something I noticed most for the second essay, the visual text analysis. Finding a interesting text was hard, and finding reliable secondary sources was even harder, even with the Columbus State Online Database. Although some researching took place outside of school, most of the actual essay writing took place in school during the work days. Even with the unexpected amount of research that I had, managing time was not a great concern for me.…

Good grammar is important in writing from capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. I have experience writing a five page essay. I proofread it several times, turned it in and made a grade I was not expecting to get all because of bad grammar usage. It is ways to check for bad grammar such as getting a tutor to look over it, proofread, and looking over rules for…

“Procrastination is key” said no one, ever. That is why I had a bout of anxiety when I waited to write this essay, especially when I had one eye on my college applications, and the other on approaching deadlines. Scary, I know. However, I had a reason for waiting, and it was a good one.…

I also had punctuation errors, putting periods inside of quotations, and capitalizing words that didn’t need to be capitalized. And, I realized that my descriptions were vague, so I started to divulge more details in the essays. I can fix this by either taking out unnecessary details, or by making them into multiple compound sentences. Also I have noticed that I had run on sentences. My essay did have some good qualities to it though.…

My life began to spiral downward before fifth grade began. I found myself an endless loop over summer vacation of waking up, experiencing the day as a blur, sleep, then repeat. This drove me to discover a new way to spend my day. On the television I noticed a recurring advertisement for a game called ‘World of Warcraft’. At first I instilled the mindset that I could spend my time pragmatically but eventually I succumbed to boredom.…

I have noticed in my different essays while examining them that I would often excel in one part of the essay, while still failing to repair other flaws. In my Modernism essay, I incorporated evidence well, but I did not add smooth transitions, making the writing seem choppy. In my synthesis essay, I made sure to polish my transitions and include plenty of evidence to support my claims, yet the essay was focused too much on the evidence and not enough on the arguments themselves and the meaning of the evidence. Nevertheless, I fixed nearly every mistake there was in my last essay, an analysis of The Visit. I used strong diction that contributed to both imagery and my defeated tone.…

Jamie – 582 WORDS Composition has changed my thinking in more ways than one. Writing is no longer a burden, but an opportunity to expand my thinking. Although I am not great at writing and I have more to learn, I now enjoy exploring ideas and putting pen to paper. I have been challenged almost to the brink of insanity and pushed to the edge but I have grown not only in my studies, but as a writer. My writing process in the beginning of this course was total chaos.…

Tquisha, can you believe it? We have almost completed our third college class, yet it seems like only yesterday since we had orientation in Nashville, TN. As you stated in this week’s discussion post the connection between using proper grammar in our speech, and writing is a close one (T. Waller, personal communication, January 3, 2017). Furthermore, throughout this class, I have worked hard to speak grammatically correct, and I have noticed a small improvement that correlates to my writing. I believe that it is fair to say that our grasp of grammar has increased exponentially throughout this course, and I am excited to see our growth.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
