There is no doubt that social media has become a major part of the lives of billions of people across the globe. The immense power of the internet is both positive and negative; it can be used for an organization to spread awareness of a charitable cause, or it can encourage ridiculous gossip stories that internet trolls thrive off. However, there is no doubt that the internet plays a key role in today’s mass mediated communication. This is proven through Gary Turk’s Look up and 40 Hour Famine’s Teenage Affluenza.

Behind shots of the person over their shoulder or behind their back is used to let the audience relate to the character by seeing from the view that they would be seeing. Close up of the phone after the character has left it at home emphasises the key message of the lack of need for the technology. Close ups of the children’s shoes playing in the grass is used in the last scene. This memorable image is placed at the end of the film to leave the audience with nostalgic feelings. Turk uses dull, everyday life scene to allow the viewer to relate to the story. Plain clothes and a black backdrop is used to ensure the viewer focuses on the spoken word and the story rather than ostentatious props. Music plays a key part in the film as no natural sound is used throughout. The building and increasing speed of the music during times of anticipation intrigues the viewer while giving a sense of urgency and change. The music is lowered when Turk states key points such as “smart phones and dumb people”, his intentions of this is to emphasise the topic. All of the techniques worked together smoothly and contributed to the film
