Analytic Commentary: The poem’s overall message is that a person is more than their looks. Their characteristics and traits such as being resilient are what makes them special. It is more meaningful to acknowledge the traits that make a person special rather than just complimenting on their appearance. Some people get intimidated by someone who speaks their mind, or they may not like hearing the truth. The truth may not always be pretty, but it should be heard.
Analytic Point: Parents play a big role in influencing who one is, both how they look and act.
Analytic Commentary: Parents pass down physical traits such as eye color, as well as characteristics that define a person. The exhaust and wilting fingers suggest the girls in the family are the ones doing the actual hard work, such as cooking and cleaning. It is interesting that in this case, the negative trait, the rage, comes from the father.
Analytic Point: Western beauty is idealized, while people of color are criticized for the way they look.
Analytic Commentary: It is the norm everywhere to follow western beauty standards. Face products such as skin whitening cream, and surgeries such as nose jobs cater to changing one’s appearance so that it conforms with western beauty standards. However, western beauty should not be the ideal definition of beauty. Everyone is beautiful in their own ways. The way one looks contains a bit of their culture and it should not be erased.
