Personal Narrative: How Eminem Changed My Life

In the song, Lose Yourself, Eminem began with the statement, “Look, if you had one shot, one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted. One moment. Would you capture it or just let it slip?” This particular verse has crossed my mind hundreds of times and I ask myself what I would do if I was in a situation like that. Now, a couple of years ago, I would have chosen to take the easy way out and let the opportunity pass by. Unlike then, today I would have taken the shot and give my all to grasp the opportunity. Through determination, persistent, and courage, I have been able to break through my barrier of fearing failure.
In the first place, determination allowed me to push myself to always try and not be scared of messing up. When I was first grade, I was not a very vocal child. If a question was asked I would rarely ever raise my hand and when I did, I would murmur the

Little more than a year ago, I used to be a very timid kid and make a big deal over small problems. I used to be frightened of getting a B as a grade and afraid that my parents would be disappointed in me. In reality, my parents were absolutely fine with me getting a B as long as I was doing my best. My brother didn’t have the same problem I did and had great grades. I asked him for help and he told me that I just need to take whatever I was facing and not be afraid of it. With what he told me in mind, I came to school and didn’t fret about the big tests anymore. To sum it up, three of Jackie Robinson’s nine values, determination, persistence, and courage, allowed me to get past my fear of failing. Sometimes, I think back on what I used to be like and chuckle at the fact that I used to cry over a spelling test. None of this wouldn’t have been possible without my family and my soccer coach. If it weren’t for them, I would most likely still be the scared, timid child I was. Ask yourself the same
