The greatest motivation for me to attend CCU is the faith that my mother displayed in those days at Park Place. My mother had a college degree, she had more earning power than my dad, yet she yielded to his leadership. I remember even my his sisters complaining to her about our lifestyle, and stating that they would just go out and seek a job to help provide a better life for their children if put in her situation, but instead she became a stay-at-home mom. That decision helped us kids more than we could understand at the time, and it is something we appreciate more than anything now. Regardless of the fact that we lived in the ghetto, our mother taught us culture. She would braid all four of my sisters’ hair listening to opera, and she would often take us for walks to the local library or museums. She read to us almost every night from a children’s bible that she received for one of us as a gift. She bought me an Edgar Alan Poe book collection and a chemistry set for a Christmas gift. All four of my sisters learned to play the violin. Our mother, through her actions and what she exposed us to, taught us to expand our horizons beyond the culture we lived
